There’s a place called Blue Mountains not far from Sydney, Australia. Given its canyons, waterfalls, and cliff faces all tinged blue from the Eucalyptus in the gum trees, it sounds like a mystical locale from a sci-fi film. This is where electronic multi-instrumentalist duo Hermitude—Angus “El Gusto” Stuart and Luke “Luke Dubs” Dubber—spent their formative years.

“It’s pretty awesome,” smiles Luke. “It’s so bushy that there are all kinds of hikes you could do. You’d go bashing through the bush, making your own tracks, and exploring.”

Hermitude approach music with that same trailblazing mindset. Since their first indie release Alleys to Valleys (2003), the pair have become genre trendsetters. 2012’s HyperParadise went platinum in Australia, and the group received Australian Music Prize—which identities and rewards the “Most Outstanding Creative Australian Album of the Year”—trumping the likes of Tame Impala and Flume in the process. With countless sold out shows under their belts, 2015 sees them make a veritable splash stateside at festivals including Lollapalooza, Governor’s Ball, SXSW, Lighting In A Bottle, and more. Most importantly, their fifth full-length album, Dark Night Sweet Light (Elefant Traks) debuted at #1 on Australia’s ARIA album chart. Dark Night Sweet Light is a proper introduction to a worldwide audience (out August 28 via Nettwerk).

Fusing hip-hop beats, free-flowing jazz melodies, and swooning synths, they hone a singular style. Luke goes on, “It’s ever-evolving. The feeling is like playing jazz melodies on a massive synth at a rave. However, it goes deeper”

On Dark Night Sweet Light, Hermitude strike a middle ground between the post-J Dilla “Future Beats” movement of Flying Lotus and turn-of-the-century British electronica. The boys found distinct inspiration for the new music in Los Angeles, immersing themselves in its underground.

“When the Future Beats scene happened in L.A., it was a breath of fresh air,” affirms Luke. “We filtered that into our earliest influences. HyperParadise was mainly analog synths and a few samples. This time around, we used software synthesizers and digital sounds evocative of the recent movement. The drums are that snappy high frequency 808 sound. It’s shinier.”

The record’s first single “Through The Roof” [feat. Young Tapz] begins with a rewired Mariachi section sounding the horns before ascending into a powerful synth riff set to swinging drums with an unshakable dancehall-inspired declaration, “And you’ll never shut this shit down.”

“Lyrically, that’s about a party we went to,” recalls Luke. “It was packed with so many people in this old decrepit building. There were three floors filled with everybody jumping and dancing. It was like the structure could collapse at any moment. The cops had to close the highway to shut it down! We wanted to capture that energy.”

Having spent some of his youth in Cuba, Angus returned home to Australia with a stockpile of tropical sounds to experiment with, ranging from calypso to reggaeton. These imports heavily inform the duo’s instrumental hip-hop cuts like “Bermuda Bay.”

For the August 2015 release, Hermitude adds several bonus tracks to the album to include collaborations with Big K.R.I.T., Estelle and Pell.

For “The Buzz” redux, Hermitude team up with one of their favorite MCs Big K.R.I.T., creating an intoxicating and infectious intergalactic anthem. “When we heard that he liked the track, we were over the moon,” says Luke. “We went to his studio in Atlanta, and he nailed it in one take. It was incredible to watch him in the studio because he’s a big influence, and we love his music. The song itself is about a moment of elation. You’re so happy you’ve got this buzzing energy inside you want to share. We all felt it in the studio, for sure.”

“Hazy Love” couples smooth and striking vocals from Estelle with elegantly airy production, illuminating another facet of their sound and the singer’s. “It was a departure for the both of us,” Luke continues. “She’s known for having such a big voice, and this was more vulnerable.”

Elsewhere, “Searchlight” couples a sizzling and soulful verse with a distinct dancefloor drop and “Ukiyo” featuring “Spotify Emerging Artist” Pell (“the newest rapper to reinvent the NOLA sound” – Okayplayer) delivers a tightly knit eclectic gem, expanding the sonic palette further.

Ultimately, Hermitude’s blaze trails to a duality that engages on a deeper level. The title captures the two moods of the group and the record. Luke leaves off, “there are really bright happy and energetic moments, but there are also deep, introspective moments. Dark Night is when you’re out in the club grinding on the dance floor. Sweet Light is when you’re at home on a Sunday afternoon listening with your headphones.”

Dark Night Sweet Light successfully exists in both worlds and cuts through everything else out there.
